Gary and Lou live off the beaten path. They like it just like they have it, but a few changes might be okay. We talked about their property and the natural state of it. They don't want to change much, but would like to explore a few changes. Where they live it's typical of where a lot of us would like to live. So, we talked about a few changes to their landscape and it might be worth considering. Here's are the plants that I think will make their landscape a little more interesting.
-Rose Creek Abelia stays pretty short and compact. And deer don't have it on their menu.
-Blackfoot Daisy grows wild all over the Hill Country.
-Katie Ruellia is a dwarf wild petunia. It's an annual but it drops lots of seeds during the year, so it usually comes back in the spring.
For that shady spot
-Acanthus mollis shows off big in the summer.
-Pam's Pink Turk's Cap will get about 5' tall.
-Big Momma Turks Cap will get even bigger...maybe 6' tall and bigger leaves and bigger flowers.
Okay, so you have some pots that are in the shade. Try some of this stuff- Coral Bells Huerchera. There are a bunch of different variations out there...here are three.
And speaking of many choices, here are 3 choices for Autumn Sage- Coral, White and Purple.
Okay...more of the same. This time it's ferns- Holly Fern, Autumn Fern, and Southern Wood Fern. All great in the shade.
For narrow plants try Gulfstream Nandina, Butterfly Iris, and Firepower Nandina.
So you like purple flowers? Here are Angelonia (comes in a bunch of other colors too), Homestead Verbena, and Prairie Verbena.
Okay, and you want a vine- Butterfly Vine, Star Jasmine and Hall's Honeysuckle.
-Grayleaf Cotoneaster- you can keep it short and nice.
-Gold Dust Aucuba- great for the shade.
-Bush Germander- little blue flowers in the spring.
Here's some nice color for you that the deer won't eat.
-Caladiums
-Coleus
-Red Shrimp Plant
A new plant great for the shade is Milky Way Aspidistra. It's a dwarf and those little specs on the leaves remind me of the stars at night.
-Tuscan Blue Rosemary is a great herb that makes a great shrub.
-And American Beautyberry is loaded with berries in the fall.
Dats All Folks. Thanks for dropping by!!
