Designing a landscape when living with deer

Updated: Feb 7, 2020

I met with Albert and Denise who live in a beautiful area on the north side of San Antonio. The landscape was planted years ago when the population of deer was very small, but now the population has increased and their landscape continues to disappear as the deer dine there daily. They like traditional landscapes with hedges, plants that grow fast, low maintenance, and of course, deer resistant plants. Below are the plants I've recommended for the new landscape.

Prostrate Rosemary- great deer resistant perennials that is more like a shrub since it is evergreen.

Upright Rosemary- can be sheared into a hedge or left to grow unsheared.

Butterfly Iris- white blooms in the summer.

Dwarf Yaupon Holly- you can let them grow together and shear them as a solid hedge.

Dwarf Yaupon Holly- Or it can be sheared to remain an individual plant and use in front of taller plants.

Variegate Liriope- great plant for an evergreen border.

Emerald Goddess Liriope- Another great border plant.

Texas Lantana- great native perennial.

Yellow Trailing Lantana- one of a dozen different Lantana selections available.

Blackfoot Daisy- great native perennial.

Zinnia- low growing, always blooming, many colors to choose from. But this is an annual.

Glossy Abelia- you can keep this in a hedge 3'-6' tall and it will stay full to the bottom

Bicolor Iris- this will produce cream colored blooms on and off all summer.

Bush Germander- for some reason deer don't like gray plants. And this is a good one. Small blue flowers in the spring.

Chindo Viburnum- also called Awabuki or Japanese Viburnum. But it has big leaves and grows fast.

Radiance Abelia- compact variegated plant that adds interest to any landscape. It can take a little shade too.

Compact Cherry Laurel- I like this because it's more of an upright grower than most big shrubs so you can use it as a tall, narrow hedge.

Pink Skullcap- great perennial that stays low and loves hot weather. Blooms sporadically all summer.

Viburnum suspensum (aka Sandankwa Viburnum)- this is one of the best dark green deer resistant plants to use as a hedge in south Texas. You can maintain it at 3.5' to 8' tall.

That's it for now.
