Better With a Plan

Updated: May 23, 2023

Jennifer is ready to work on the yard but wants to have a plan to make sure she is choosing the right plants. Here are some good choices for her

-Whales Tongue Agave is a cool succulent. It will bloom in 6-10 years.

-Weeping Yaupon Holly- it grows skyward but the limbs all grow downward. There are only a few plants that do that.

-Scarlet's Peak Holly- this plant grows very narrow and puts on red berries.

-Bicolor Iris blooms all summer.

-Little John Bottlebrush has red blooms in the spring.

-Blue Plumbago can be planted in sun or shade...and blooms most of the growing season.

-Pink Skullcap blooms on and off the entire growing season.

-So does it's cousin Purple Skullcap.

-Red Yucca isn't really a yucca...so it doesn't form a trunk, but just keeps dividing and forming a new plant. The more plants the more blooms. It's starting to bloom now (in April) and these spikes will stay up all summer.

Here are 3 drought tolerant plants:

-Texas Betony-spring, summer and fall bloomer.

-Wooly Stemodia is a gray ground cover and deer don't eat it.

-Mexican Feather Grass sways with the summer breeze.

-most Salvias are deer resistant. This one is- Mystic Spires Salvia blooms for months on end.

-Gaura or Whirling Butterflies- you can find it that blooms white or pink.

-Four Nerve Daisy- a great Texas native that blooms about 12 months every year.

-Variegated Ginger adds color and interest to a landscape

-Homestead Verbena lights up the bed in the spring.

-Chocolate Chip Ajuga is so small and tight at first but it just keeps getting better each year.

-Foxtail Fern is a good perennial that comes back every year.

-Goldsturm Daisy gets better every year.

-Purple Coneflower is another great perennial that gets better every year.

And if you have plenty of sun shine, and a trellis, here are some great vines to add color to your landscape. Check these out:

-Pink Coral Vine- summer to fall blooms. It will freeze to the ground and return the next year.

-Caroina Jessamine- sweet smelling yellow flowers in the spring.

-Hyacinth Bean Vine- pretty pink flowers lead to bright purple seed pods. It's an annual that produces a gillion seeds each year.

-Alice du Pont Mandevilla- an annual that blooms spring to fall. Give it a little shade in the afternoon works best for this vine.

-Coral Honeysuckle- coral colored flowers in the summer. And evergreen.

-and last and definitely not least...Tangerine Beauty Crossvine- spring blooms and then a few more all summer. And its evergreen.

One of the great deer resistant plants for Central Texas is Abelia. There are some good varieties. Here are 3 that are compact and add great contrast to the landscape, and they are all easy to keep in the 3' range.

-Rose Creek- green leaves and white blooms in the summer.

-Kaleidoscope Abelia-golden variegation that takes on a reddish hue when the weather gets cooler in the fall.

-Radiance- a perfect cream colored variegation that can handle the sun or some shade.

So, there ya go. Lots of great plants for Central Texas. And, all are deer resistant...at least most of the time. Deer have gotten so that you can't trust them any more.

Anyway, if you have questions let me know. I'm glad to help.
