You have to admit, being surrounded by pretty plants does makes life more enjoyable. And that's what Melissa wants. When she comes home each day she walks past a flower bed that, at this time, other than a little ground cover, is mostly empty. She wants to spruce it up a little. So, here are some plants might bring her a little more happiness.
There isn't a lot of room for big plants, but these will work.
-Purple Diamond Loropetalum will get about 4' tall in about 3-4 years.
-Spring Bouquet Viburnum has white flowers in the spring.
-Pink Lady Indian Hawthorn has pink flowers in the spring.
Some easy perennials include
-Pink Skullcap
-Purple Skullcap
-Katie Ruellia
And a few more
-Blue Plumbago
-Dusty Miller
-Mexican Petunia
Here are three great ground covers
-Purple Heart Wandering Jew
-Wooly Stemodia
-Silver Ponyfoot
--Autumn Sage (aka Salvia greggii) is a central Texas favorite. There are quite a few cultivars that bloom in a variety of colors. Here we have purple, White and coral.
-Giant Liriope is a stand alone plant for any garden, sun or shade.
-Variegated Liriope is a great border plant
-Big Blue Liriope is also a great border plant.
-Lantana is a heat loving perennial that offers lots of choice. There are dozens of varieties and more come out every year. Here are Miss Huff, Delhome, and New Gold. All bloom all summer.
-Horsetail Reed gives a unique look and will not overcrowd an area. Plant it in a pot or in the ground.
-Dianella (aka Variegated Flax Lily) has long variegated leaves that add interesting and color to the garden.
-Blackfoot Daisy is a Hill Country native that might go dormant during a dry summer, but will pop back up after it rains and cools off.
Perennials make it easy because they come back year after year. But there are some great annuals that will work in a confined area. Here we have
-Allison False Heather (aka Mexican Heather)
-Blue Daze
-Lamb's Ear
-And if you have room for a climbing rose, here are three good choices: -Blaze
-Joseph's Coat
-Don Juan
That's it for today.
